Strengthening EU–Sri Lanka Partnership under the Global Gateway Initiative

BRUSSELS :. Pēteris Ustubs, Director for Asia & Pacific at DG INTPA of the European Commission, met with Hon. Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment of Sri Lanka, in Brussels today.

The discussion focused on Sri Lanka’s development trajectory and the opportunities for collaboration under the EU’s Global Gateway initiative. Ustubs expressed his appreciation for the country’s recent progress, noting the growing stability, improved predictability in national governance, and economic management. He also highlighted the key targets Sri Lanka has achieved within a short period.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to transparent governance, rule-based institutions, and responsible reforms that enhance international confidence.

Both sides agreed to advance cooperation in areas including sustainable infrastructure, digital connectivity, renewable energy, skills development, and people-centred growth, aiming to build a more resilient and forward-looking partnership.
