Sri Lankan Muslims celebrate Muharram- Islamic New Year

COLOMBO — The Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs had organized a Religious Programme on the dawn of  Islamic New Year ( Muharram ) held at the Kirillapone Jumma Mosque,  Colombo on Monday July 8.     

It was held under the patronage of the Director of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs M.H.A.M. Riflan.

Buddhasasana, Culture and Religious Affairs Minister Vidura Wickramanayake graced the ceremony as a chief guest.

Ihsaniiyah Arabic College Principal Moulavi M.F.M. Farood addressed the gathering on the significance of Islamic New Year Muharram and Kompannavidiya Ahadiyyah School students sang the Qaseedah.

Board of Trustees of the Mosque presented a mementos to the Minister Vidura Wickramanayake, Ministry Secretary H.M.B.P. Herath and Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Department Director M.H.A.M. Riflan at this ceremony.

Member of Parliament A.H.M. Fowzie, Former Deputy Mayor of Colombo M.T.M. Iqbal, Member of the Hajj Committee Haniffa Ishaq,  Kirulopane Jumma Mosque Vice President Imtiaz Musthafa, Secretary Sabri Joonoos, Treasurer Zahira Marzook, Department Programme Coordinator Ash Sheikh Mufthi Mursi, Kollupitiya Masjid  Federation President Rizan Hussain, and Department Senior Officials were also present.
