Sri Lankan government will abstain from holding Iftar parties during Ramadan in support of the Gaza victims

COLOMBO – In sympathy with the Palestinians in Gaza, the Sri Lankan government will not hold Iftar parties during the holy month of Ramadan this year and its proceeds will be donated to the Palestinian cause.

The decision to do away with Iftar this year was taken at the cabinet meeting held on Monday, February 26, Minister of Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara said here in the evening on Monday during the Kuwait National Day celebrations at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel on Monday.

Nanayakkara who officiated as the chief guest for the National Day celebrations broke this message before he formally started his official speech.
“ Sri Lanka government is committed to the Palestinian cause and we will support them at this moment of time,” Nanayakkara said, pointing out that the regular Iftar parties hosted by the President and the prime minister will not be there and those funds will be diverted to a Palestinian Fund which would be set up for this cause . The government hopes to donate $ One million and those who want to contribute can donate their contributions to this fund which would be eventually credited to the Palestinian cause
