COLOMBO: A statement from Indian politician Subramanian Swamy has caused an uproar on social media with his cryptic message allegedly pertaining to the unrest that broke out in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy had Tweeted, “India must send in the Indian Army to restore Constitutional sanity. At present anti-Indian foreign forces are taking advantage of people’s anger. This affects India’s national security.”
Known to be a close ally of the Rajapaksa family, the Indian politician has earned backlash from several Sri Lankan social media users over his Twitter message.
Former Western Province Governor and Leader of National Unity Alliance, Azath Salley said Swamy has no business to make such comments. “: Let him have friendship with the Rajapaksa family but he cannot underestimate the Sri Lankan army according to his whims and fancies. The former governor insisted that the Indian government should take appropriate action against Swamy who has made an irresponsible statement that has embarrassed the Indian government.
Several India Media have also reported that the senior BJP politician was referring to the recent outbreak of unrest in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters of Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-government protesters in Colombo causing widespread unrest across the country.
Even though Mahinda Rajapaksa tendered his resignation from the post of Prime Minister following the incident, it triggered unrest among the public, causing them to lash out at SLPP politicos, the Police, and those linked to the government.
