COLOMBO : Sri Lankan foreign ministry has received several media inquiries whether USA has warned Sri Lanka that they will impose sanctions if SL provides supplies/ services to US sanctioned vessels loitering close to Sri Lankan waters (about 24 nautical miles away from Sri Lanka waters).
In a press release ,the ministry has said : ” Kindly understand that the US has issued secondary sanctions as their own common policy perspective which is applying globally and do not target only SL or any specific country.
Also these secondary sanctions have been announced by America on 24 August and it says that if any individual or entity provides services to US sanctioned vessels risks losing access to the US financial system.
Information on these secondary sanctions are commonly available to the public and the individuals and entities in the shipping industry/ merchant shipping industry are well aware about the application of the secondary sanctions and their implications.
Further, these kind of vessels are not only in Indian Ocean and loitering in some other oceans as well due to the current conflict situation and these secondary US sanctions are commonly apply across the world.”
