COLOMBO A funeral of one of the most well-known Bhikkus, the Chief Sanghanayake of Colombo Nawa Korale of the Siyam Nikaya, and the Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya, Ven. Galboda Gnanissara Thera, affectionately known as ‘Podi Hamuduruwo’, who transformed the religious landscape in Colombo, took place on Monday, August 5 at the Gangaramaya Temple with full state honours. name became synonymous with the temple’s legacy with his leadership and visionary efforts in modernising the temple. The Gangaramaya Temple is noted for its unique approach, emphasising close community engagement and accessibility.
Under the guidance of Ven. Gnanissara Thera, the temple prioritised being approachable, with monks working closely with the public to support their well-being.
The Ven. Thera was a pioneer in providing English language education and career paths to the youth of this country. He fulfilled the duty of the Sangha by caring for the elderly and performing social services.
His remains were placed at Hunupitiya Gangarama Temple for the public to pay their last respects.
Then, his remains were placed at the ‘Ransivige’ and thousands of flowers were sprinkled before it was taken around the sacred ground. After performing all the necessary rituals and offering floral tributes, the casket was carried on the shoulders of student monks and other monks to the ‘Ransivige’, which was decorated with flowers. For the devotees to pay their last respects, the casket was taken around the sacred grounds and then to the funeral pyre.
On this occasion, the Maha Sangha representing all sects including the Malwatu and Asgiri Chapters as well as other religious dignitaries, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and several Ministers were also present.
