COLOMBO : Debating chambers like @OxfordUnion and @CambridgeUnion have long stood for fearless dialogue and the testing of ideas through reasoned argument. Having had the privilege of addressing the Cambridge Union myself, I know these forums are at their best when difficult questions are met with open engagement.
It is therefore regrettable that an invitation extended in that very tradition had to be withdrawn in the face of organised pressure. When dialogue gives way to disruption, valuable opportunities to bridge divides and challenge narratives in a civilised manner are lost.
Sri Lanka’s future and genuine reconciliation cannot be built through echo chambers or refusal to engage. Those who hold opposing views must be willing to meet, question and listen.
Silencing voices does not strengthen democracy; it weakens the very ideals universities are meant to uphold.
I remain hopeful that such historic institutions will continue to be arenas for debate, not battlegrounds for intimidation, and that meaningful conversations about our country can still take place with maturity and respect.
