Significance of Esala Poya Day Monday, July 3

DR RUVAIZ HANIFFA

COLOMBO

As an avid admirer of Buddhist philosophy to me todays Esala Poya is the MOST significant Poya Day of all

It was the day The Noble Buddha set forth the basic tenets of his philosophy ( by delivering his inaugural discourse-  Dhamackkappavanttana Suta.)

I take the liberty of reproducing the Noble Eightfold path he preached on this day

1. Right Understanding

2. Right Thoughts

3. Right Speech

4. Right Action

5. Right Livelihood

6. Right Effort

7. Right Mindfulness

8. Right Concentration

If we can practice at least an iota of each constituent of the Noble Eight Fold Path we will be better individuals better families better communities and ultimately a better country.
