COLOMBO : As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day, Sri Lanka joins the people and leadership of the Kingdom in extending warm greetings and best wishes for peace, prosperity and continued progress.
The Saudi National Day is not only an occasion to celebrate the Kingdom’s achievements and national identity. It is also an opportunity for friends of Saudi Arabia, including Sri Lanka, to reflect on the longstanding ties that have brought the two countries closer over the decades.
Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia have a history spanning more than five decades. In 2025, the two countries marked the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, providing an important milestone in a relationship that has steadily expanded beyond traditional diplomatic links. �

Today, the relationship encompasses trade, investment, tourism, employment, education, cultural exchange and people-to-people contacts. Recent discussions between the two countries have also identified tourism, energy, logistics and infrastructure as areas with potential for greater Saudi investment in Sri Lanka. �

The people-to-people bridge
Perhaps the strongest human link between the two nations is the Sri Lankan community living and working in Saudi Arabia. Thousands of Sri Lankans have contributed to the Kingdom’s development in a wide range of professions and industries, while their earnings and support continue to have significance for families back home.
The relationship must therefore always place the welfare, dignity and rights of migrant workers at its centre. Strong diplomatic relations become truly meaningful when they improve the lives of ordinary people.
The Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh has also strengthened its engagement with the expatriate community through initiatives such as its “Talk to Your Ambassador” programme, which reached its 50th session in July 2026. �

A new economic chapter
There is considerable scope for the relationship to move into a new economic phase.
The establishment of the Saudi–Sri Lanka Business Council between the Federation of Saudi Chambers and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka is an encouraging development. Both sides are seeking greater business-to-business cooperation, investment and trade. �

Sri Lanka can offer opportunities in tourism, hospitality, logistics, agriculture, services and other sectors, while Saudi Arabia’s expanding economy and investment capacity can create new avenues for partnership.
Cooperation should not, however, be limited to the movement of goods and capital. Knowledge, technology, skills and innovation should increasingly become part of the bilateral relationship.
Working together for a sustainable future
Another emerging area is environmental cooperation. Sri Lanka became a regional member of the Middle East Green Initiative in 2026 and participated in its Executive Committee meeting for the first time in July. This provides another platform for the two countries to exchange knowledge and cooperate on environmental challenges. �

Tourism also offers exciting possibilities. Recent discussions between Sri Lankan and Saudi officials have explored cooperation in tourism, investment, foreign employment and community engagement, including skills development for the hospitality sector. �

A friendship to be strengthened
Saudi Arabia has undergone remarkable transformation in recent years, while Sri Lanka continues to seek new opportunities for economic recovery, investment and development. These different strengths can complement one another.
The future of Saudi–Sri Lankan relations should therefore be built on mutual respect, practical cooperation and shared prosperity.
On this Saudi National Day, Sri Lanka can rightly celebrate the friendship between the two peoples while looking forward to a deeper partnership—one that creates opportunities for businesses, workers, young people and future generations in both countries.
May the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continue its journey of peace, prosperity and progress, and may the bonds of friendship between Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka grow stronger in the years ahead.
