Sajith calls for a fortnight lockdown to curb spread of Covid

COLOMBO: Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa made a clarion call for a two-week lockdown in the island to curb the fast spreading virus in the country.

Speaking in Parliament, Sajith Premadasa said: “ The government must understand where it went wrong when finding solutions to the issues and come to a practical solution.

“ The country needs solutions to the issues that have been arisen,  Premadasa said, advising that all differences must be cast aside to solve the issues.

‘The WHO warns that the number of infections in the country could increase to 6,000 daily cases and the deaths can increase to 220 per day,’ he said adding that if the country decides to go for a lockdown, as per the WHO those numbers could be reduced, he noted.

Related trade unions are calling for a two-week shutdown to save lives and protect the health system, Premadasa said.

The Opposition Leader said that as a person who was infected with COVID-19, he was very concerned and afraid of his life.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to reach a decision in a humane manner,” he said adding that the entire parliament must come together to propose to the President to go for a two-week lockdown.

If this attempt fails,he said : “ We request the public to move into self-isolation,” he added.

‘Let’s give it a try. Let’s lockdown for two weeks. Then we can see the numbers reduce,’ said Sajith Premadasa.(with inputs from News First)
