COLOMBO — More than 100 Sri Lankan students have been selected to pursue their higher education in Russia under the Russian State Scholarship Programme this year, representing a significant expansion of educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students.
Recipients and their parents were present at a presentation held on Friday September 25 at the Russian House in Colombo.
The scholarships cover a wide range of educational levels, from vocational programmes to Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD studies, offering students the opportunity to pursue their chosen fields at universities across different regions of the Russian Federation. Available fields span a diverse range of disciplines, including medicine, engineering, information technology, economics, international relations, tourism, aviation, architecture, science, humanities and other specialised fields.
The expansion of the programme from 53 places to 100 plus places on quota reflects the growing educational cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation.
The meeting provided an opportunity for students and their parents to receive their official scholarship letters and important guidance before beginning their studies in Russia.
The occasion was graced by the Counselor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation and Director of the Russian Centre in Colombo Madam Maria Popova, Chief Executive Officer of the Russian House in Colombo Mr. Buddhapriya Ramanayaka, Senior Education Manager Ms. Elina Babaeva and Education Officer Ms. Buthmi Perera, who shared valuable insights and congratulated the scholarship recipients on their achievement wishing them every success in their academic journey and future endeavors in Russia.
During the session, students were briefed on the student visa application process, required documentation, travel preparations and arrival procedures in Russia. The session was also an opportunity for students and parents to clarify practical questions regarding their departure and transition to studying in Russia.

These scholarships open the door to gaining knowledge, professional skills and international experience in one of the world’s established higher education systems.
