COLOMBO :Russia has pledged its full support to help Sri Lanka overcome the ongoing energy crisis triggered by global economic disruptions linked to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The assurance was given by Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin during a special meeting with Sri Lanka’s Leader of the House and Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake, who is currently on an official visit to Russia.
The discussions took place on March 30 in Moscow at the Russian Ministry of Energy. During the meeting, both sides held extensive talks on the prevailing energy crisis, long-standing bilateral relations, import-export processes, and the impact of the Middle East conflict.
Deputy Minister Marshavin emphasized that Russia is ready to extend maximum assistance to resolve issues related to Sri Lanka’s energy supply. He noted that Russia could facilitate the provision of required fuel supplies for April and May, while also supporting efforts to address any future shortages.
He further highlighted the importance of streamlining the process of releasing fuel stocks promptly and stated that necessary arrangements would be made through agreements between Russian companies and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. Discussions were also held on mutually agreeable payment mechanisms.
In addition, Russia expressed its willingness to supply coal required for Sri Lanka’s energy needs.
