COLOMBO: To mark Iranian Cinema Day on September 12, Iran Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran hosted a special programme attended by a large number of enthusiasts of Iranian cinema.
The programme was organised to celebrate the rich heritage of Iranian cinema and its significant role in the international film industry. It also provided an opportunity for cinema enthusiasts and members of the public to become acquainted with the distinctive artistic, cultural and social aspects reflected in Iranian cinema.
Addressing the gathering, Ali Kebriaei Zadeh, Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, spoke about the distinctive characteristics of Iranian cinema.
He said Iranian cinema has gained a special position in world cinema over the past decades not only because of the numerous international awards it has received, but also because of its emphasis on ethical values, human relationships, avoidance of violence, and the creativity and innovations of Iranian filmmakers.
He added that the close connection between the Iranian film industry and the country’s rich culture and ancient civilisation has also contributed to the distinctive position of Iranian cinema internationally, attracting a large number of enthusiasts around the world.
The Cultural Counsellor further noted that, unlike the cinema of many countries where the heroes of films often have little connection with the realities of everyday life and society, the protagonists of Iranian films are generally ordinary people, such as workers, teachers or drivers.
As part of the programme, a video featuring the renowned late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami was screened, highlighting his distinctive and different approach to the art and industry of filmmaking.
The programme concluded with the screening of the acclaimed Iranian feature film “Bodyguard.”
