COLOMBO ; The Colombo Additional Magistrate Court No.03 sentenced Rev.Galagoda Gnanasara Thero for nine months imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1,500 on Thursday,Jan 9 in Colombo
The Thero was found guilty of the charges under Sec. 291B under the Penal Code of Sri Lanka.
Attorneys for the accused Ganasara Thero pleaded and mitigated for a lesser punishment by citing his medical condition by tendering medical reports.
This conviction was made on a hate speech made by the suspect in the year 2016, quoting, “Islam is a cancer and that he will wipe it out.”
Following this statement, complaints were made by many members of the Muslim community.
This conviction was made after a prolonged trial, and the case was prosecuted by Kirulapona Police.
The interests of the first complainant were looked after by team of lawyers headed by Senior Attorney Shiraz Noordeen. File pix
