COLOMBO : Reverend Omalpe Sobitha Thero has called for a probe on the $5 million donation given by Saudi Arabia to rehabilitate the families of the victims of the Easter Sunday bomb blasts that took place in five places in the island nation.
The Thero was speaking to the press on Wednesday after he lodged a complain at the criminal investigations department on Wednesday to investigate the fate of the said donation which is nearly Rs one billion in Sri Lankan rupees .
The donation was pledged by the Secretary General of the Muslim World League Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa,when he launched an interfaith summit in Colombo in the presence of Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena.
Participants included Islamic, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu religious leaders, as well as more than 500 religious scholars, politicians, intellectuals and media professionals.
Sirisena delivered the opening speech. He thanked the MWL for holding the summit, and for donating $5 million to a support fund for families of victims of terrorist acts and injured people.
“I believe that this summit will spread the message of peace, harmony and coexistence,” he said. “We’re pleased to present the highest honor in Sri Lanka to the secretary-general of the MWL for his role in promoting interreligious peaceful coexistence in Sri Lanka.
The Thero said he was present at the Summit held in Colombo in July 2019 which focused on interfaith dialogue for peaceful coexistence.
The Easter Sunday bomb blasts took place in April 2019 where 257 people from all faiths including foreigners were killed and another 500 were injured and traumatized by the tragedy .
