Remains of billionaire businessman exhumed 6 months after death due to suspicions of murder

COLOMBO The body of a billionaire businessman who was supposed to have died of brain tumour was exhumed on Wednesday in Negombo on suspicions of murder.

On a complaint made by the brothers and mother of the owner of the Negombo Meepura Tyre Center, the body was uearthed for forensic study to find out the real cause of the death of the late businessman Warnakulasuriya Malinda Piyadarshana Fernando,49, who died on October 4 last year.

The body was exhumed by Colombo Judicial Medical Officer Ajith Tennakoon and his team Wednesday in the presence of Negombo Acting Magistrate Primal Amarasinghe.

Negombo Assistant Superintendent of Police Nalaka Senanayake, who conducted the investigation into the incident, was accompanied assisted by Negombo Police Station Criminal Investigation Division Officer JMS. Jayanath.

The body, which was buried six months ago, was identified by his brother Rohitha Fernando and son of the deceased, Salindra Fernando.

On suspicions, the police have arrested wife of the deceased, Punya Deepani and her servant on suspicion and they are in police custody at present. The police will continue their investigations with the forensic examinations.
