Reader’s View : Royal College: No Place for Discrimination Against Parents in Niqab?

COLOMBO : It was deeply disappointing to learn that parents wearing the niqab are reportedly being denied entry to Royal College.

As a past student of the school during the tenure of Principal L. D. H. Pieris, I had the privilege of studying in an environment where students of all communities—Sinhalese, Muslims, Burghers, and others—were treated equally and with mutual respect. That spirit of inclusiveness and harmony was one of Royal College’s greatest strengths.

It is therefore distressing to hear that Muslim mothers wearing the niqab are now being inconvenienced by this new practice. While the school has every right to ensure the safety and security of its students, such measures should not result in discrimination against any community.

If identity verification is the concern, a simple and practical solution is available. Female staff members or security officers can discreetly verify the identity of mothers wearing the niqab before granting them entry. This would address security concerns while respecting their religious beliefs and dignity.

I earnestly appeal to the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, to look into this matter and request the Principal of Royal College to review and rescind this policy. Security and inclusivity are not mutually exclusive. A premier national school such as Royal College should continue to uphold the values of equality, fairness, and respect for all Sri Lankans.
