Ramadan urges Muslims to do more charitable deeds

COLOMBO : Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa sending a Ramadan Day Message has extended his greetings and good wishes to the Sri Lankan Muslim community which is celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr with Muslims around the world, ending the fasting period of Ramadan.

The Message:

“The message that the month-long fast of Ramadan, as prescribed in the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam conveys, is religiously and spiritually important to the world.

“It is my belief that by having a correct idea of the hunger of others during the fasting period, Muslims will commit themselves for charitable deeds without any differences.

“Throughout history, the Muslim people, who have been disciplined in religiously correct teachings, have interacted with other races and religions in Sri Lankan society.

“It must also be recalled today that we, as a government, understand the need of the Muslim people to move forward without undermining this trust.

“Although the Eid-ul-Fitr rituals could not be celebrated in a festive manner this year as well as last year due to the global COVID 19 pandemic, I hope that the religious rituals associated with them will be performed within the limits of the health guidelines.

“I appreciate the contribution of all Muslims who have made sure that they do not gather in large numbers in the mosques for worship during the fasting period and perform religious rites from home.

“At a time when the whole world is facing such an epidemic crisis, I urge you to apply the religious values of Ramadan fasting for the benefit of all.

“May Eid-ul-Fitr be a happy and peaceful festival with all the blessings of Allah and without fear of disease
