COLOMBO : Ramadan is an important month for Muslims across the world. The holy month holds special significance in the Islamic lunar calendar. Throughout this month,which is also called Ramadan, people abstain from worldly pleasures, participate in community service acts and consider this period a time of spiritual reflection.
Ramadan is one of the most holy months of the year. This is that time of the year when people observe fasting for an entire month. It is observed by the Muslim community all throughout the world. Ramadan starts with the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia. This year, Ramadan has started on March 12. During this time, people consume a pre-dawn meal called suhur and keep fast for the entire day and break their fast after sunset with dates and water. This is the month of community, reflection and service.
