COLOMBO- An Ifthar reception on Sunday, April 2, during the holy month of Ramadan brought all the communities in the island under one umbrella to feast during the Ramadan breakfast.
This event was organized in collaboration between Soup Kitchen Sri Lanka and SLMCS Foundation jointly with the Torrington Walkers’ Team.
A variety of Muslim dishes were served to some 3,000 people from all communities and from all walks of life.
The Head of the Organizing Committee of the event Rizan Nazeer told Colombo Times that the whole idea of the programme is to strengthen the understanding among the various ethnic groups living in Sri Lanka and to pave the way for their peaceful coexistence.
Former president of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena said he is thankful to the organizing committee which has come forward to unite all communities and thereby build goodwill and understanding between the communities.
Traditional porridge, Kanji, was served to all guests and they had their breakfast meals in the traditional Islamic way. The programme started with the recital of Sri Lanka’s national anthem which carried the message of love and unity and speeches were made in all three languages such as Tamil, Sinhalese and English.
