PROMOTION OF TOURISM IN MALAYSIA POST-PANDEMIC

Like the rest of the world, Malaysia was no exception to the harsh impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

As the pandemic directly affected the masses and forced them to live in a “new normal” for several years, the industry continues to witness a new pattern in travelling behaviours, where hygiene and safety are prioritised, and responsible tourism increasingly became in demand.

Taking into account all these factors, Malaysia reopened its doors to welcome international tourists beginning 1st April 2022 with stringent health and safety measures to ensure the well-being of both tourists and locals.

Today, with the virus no longer declared by the WHO as a pandemic, the world returns to normalcy and the tourism industry began to pick up where it left off. Malaysia, in its recovery phase, strives to return stronger and revitalise its tourism industry to greater heights.

Domestic tourism in Malaysia remains a large contributor to the industry before, during, and after the pandemic. To further entice domestic travellers to explore the beauty of their home country, domestic promotional campaigns offering packages, discounts, and vouchers are taking place nationwide all year long, highlighting attractions and niche tourism products.

Internationally, Malaysia is actively participating in travel trade events worldwide, while conducting roadshows and sales missions to network with international industry stakeholders and promote the latest tourism products that are in demand. Collaborations with international airlines are also done to increase air connectivity to the country.

In this era of fast-paced technology, Malaysia didn’t miss leveraging the borderless, digital world and expanding its promotion through social media which has become more prominent, especially during the pandemic.

Maximising the multi-faceted platform, Malaysia places greater emphasis on promoting its rich biodiversity in the form of sustainable, nature-based and community-based tourism as the country focuses on becoming the Top of the Mind Ecotourism Destination of the World. Tourists are introduced to the country’s natural wonders, endemic flora and fauna species, multicultural society, unique culture and heritage, as well as unmatched gastronomy.
