Promote Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri-Lanka – A plea from The North-East Coordinating Committee (NECC)

JAFFNA : The North-East Coordinating Committee (NECC) a network of grass root human rights
organizations that function in all eight districts of the Northern and Eastern provinces of SriLanka has presented a petition to the visiting High Commissioner Volker Turk preceded by a street demonstration .

” We North-East Coordinating Committee (NECC) a network of grass root human rights
organizations that function in all eight districts of the Northern and Eastern provinces of SriLanka make our recommendations to your excellency as follows

  1. Sri-Lanka must abide to the UNHRC Resolution 46/1 and take responsibility to
    implement accountability mechanisms for past war crimes, crimes against humanity
    and all sorts of human rights violations
  2. Sri-Lanka must commit to seek truth and to provide justice for enforced
    disappearances with international advice and engagements
  3. Sri-Lanka shall not prevent war affected Tamil people of North and East engaging in
    memorialization and creating monuments for their disappeared and killed beloved
    ones individually and collectively
  4. Sri-Lanka must end militarization in North and East Sri-Lanka and ensure
    normalization in civil life
  5. Sri-Lanka must stop intimidating civil society organizations, journalists, social
    activists and members of CBOs
  6. Sri-Lanka must immediately end intimidating and harassing women human rights
    defenders (Please see Appendix I)
  7. Sri-Lanka must release all lands occupied by military, encroached by the
    Archeological Department and Forest Department (Please see Appendix II)
  8. Sri-Lanka must end Buddhisization in North and East and prevent encroaching Hindu
    and Muslim religious places in these areas “
