COLOMBO :T.B. Jayah Zahira College celebrated its 90th Anniversary and Honours Day at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall under the patronage of Principal M.R.M. Manzil on Saturday May 9. The ceremony commenced with the singing of the college anthem and welcome songs by the students,.
The chief guest Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who is also the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, addressed the gathering and praised the institution for its contribution to national education.
In her speech, she stated that over the years, T.B. Jayah Zahira College has made a significant contribution to the development of education in Sri Lanka by nurturing generation of students who have gone on to serve the nation with integrity, knowledge and commitment.
She further emphasized that education remains one of the most powerful tools for building an inclusive, equitable and progressive society. Institutions such as T.B. Jayah Zahira College, she noted, plays a vital role in shaping young minds, promoting unity in diversity, and fostering responsible citizenship.
During the event, the College Annual Journal was officially released, with the first copy presented to the chief guest, Harini Amarasuriya, by Principal M.R.M. Manzil. Meanwhile, the Old Boys’ Association honoured distinguished alumnus and outstanding sports legend Hafeez Marso, a double international in rugby and basketball.
Awards were also presented by the Chief Guest to students who excelled in various fields. Principal M.R.M. Manzil presented a token of appreciation to the Chief Guest.
Guests of Honour included Provincial Director of Education M.I.D.D.C. Iddamalgoda and Mayor of Colombo Vraie Cally Balthazar. Also in attendance were Deputy Director of Education of the Western Province A.S. Najeeb and Director of Education of the Colombo Zonal Education Office H.A.K.U. Hettiarachchi.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Principal K.R. Jayah, Vice Principal Mrs. F. Fazreen, Old Boys’ Association President Shabeen Ahamed, Organising Committee Chairman T.Y. Raheem, members of the School Development Executive Committee, old boys, teachers, parents, and students.
