Port City Bill enacted with a majority of 89 votes

COLOMBO : The Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill was passed with 148 votes in favour and 59 against, in Parliament on Thursday evening.

The two-day debate followed the announcement of the Supreme Court determination on Wednesday. The court said that the bill can be made valid if amended or passed through a referendum and a special majority or referendum will be required to pass it.

The Government had thereafter acknowledged the Supreme Court’s determination and had stated that the amendments will be included in the draft bill for an easy passage.

The Supreme Court issued its determination after petitions were filed against the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill by several parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
