Police curfew imposed in the western province due to pro-govt. attacks on peaceful protesters in Galle Face, Temple Trees

COLOMBO; The Inspector General of Police announced here in the afternoon on Monday,May 9 that the police curfew has been imposed in western province of the capital with immediate effect.

A group of pro-government supporters who held a meeting at the Temple Trees have clashed with the peaceful protestors opposite the Temple Trees, official residence of the prime minister. Subsequently, the group has gone to the Galle Face Green where the protestor were completing their 31st day of the protest on Monday. The shelters were demolished as a result of the clashes between the two groups. The police tear gassed the crowd to disperse the two parties.

JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake,member Sunil Handunetti and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadas are currently at the site to evaluate the tense situation. A number of injured during the clash were taken to the national hospital.  

According to reports, at least 16 individuals who sustained injuries amidst the chaotic situation have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
