Police curfew imposed in 6 areas in Colombo district with immediate effect following violence

 COLOMBO ; The Lankan government has imposed police curfew in some areas in the district of Colombo with immediate effect following violence unleashed by a group of protesters who took to the streets on Thursday evening on March 31 in Colombo.

The Police curfew has been imposed in t following areas in the Colombo district with immediate effect.

A Police official from the Media Unit told Colombo Times that the authorities are yet to take a decision about the opening of schools in these areas.

Hundreds of Sri Lankan blocked the road to the residence of  Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa near Perangiwatte , Mirihana Nugeogoda in Colombo in the evening on Thursday 31 March demanding the state to  redress the grievances of the people during ongoing economic crisis.

 The protest started around 7  pm on Thursday continued till night late night till the police with the support of the STF sprayed water canon and tear gas on the demonstartors.

The protesters main grievances included their resentment against  the 16-hour power cut, shortage of home gas , petrol, diesel and kerosene oil ,shortage of essential food items ,increase in prices of commodities because of price hike in oil prices .

The protesters mainly from the neighborhood of the president’s house in Mirihana said the power cut is only for the poor people and not for well to do people. Their mains slogan was urging the government to go home.

It was also reported that the demonstrators have set fire to a bus belong to the state.
