Police capture a lorry load of 1,800 kgs of turmeric smuggled into the island

COLOMBO : The Negombo Regional Criminal Investigation Division has seized Rs.600,000 worth of turmeric smuggled from India in a boat on Thursday.

Following the information received by the police, the contraband was seized under the supervision of Negombo Senior Superintendent of Police Saman Sigera

A police team led by Regional Crime Investigation Officer Sampath Dissanayake set up a roadblock in the Dillanduwa area in Negombo and intercepted the lorry which transported the goods.

The lorry was loaded with lentils and bran for animal feed and the turmeric was found hidden in big sacks each weighing 35 kg.

The police confiscated a total of 1800 prohibited goods from the lorry.

Investigations have revealed that the lorry was loaded from a boat in the Pitipana beach area in Negombo.

Three people have been arrested on suspicion including the lorry driver, an assistant and the owner of the goods.

The main suspect was from Mirigama area.
