NEGOMBO-Residents of Periyamulla area in Negombo are up in arms against an installation of a cell tower in the area which could generate harmful effects on the population.
The tower has been set up by a popular mobile phone operator in the country,
The tower has been built at the intersection of the Periyamulla Jumma Masjid Mawathe and the Saunders Place near the main road in Periyamulla.
The residents complained that the tower was built overnight and the company has not obtained the permission of the local authorities.
The tower is located just a few meters away from the mosque and it is in a center surrounded by the school and, houses,the residents complained
Deputy Mayor of Negombo, Mohammed Farees told Colombo Times that the municipality has not given any permission to build such towers in the area. However, Mayor Dayan Lansa said he will take necessary necessary action to stop the operations of this tower.
Municipal commissioner M/s Ruwanthi said that such facilities are allowed these days to boost the Zoom conferences conducted by schools. However, such installation has to follow certain guidelines of the Municipality.
