MANNAR : A public protest rally took place on Wednesday, June 11 in Mannar , where over a thousand people gathered peacefully to express their aversion.
The protest was in opposition to the ongoing mineral sand mining and windmills installation initiative being implemented on Mannar Island. The people believe that these projects pose direct threat to their way of life, livelihood, the environment, and natural resources.
Through this rally, the people strongly voiced their opposition to the proposed projects. They condemned the fact that local communities are being pushed toward losing their stable livelihood and firmly insisted that these projects be halted immediately.
Furthermore, on behalf of the people, a petition containing objections and demands against the projects was sent to the President of Sri Lanka.
The people expect the government to seriously consider that such projects are detrimental to public welfare and to initiate an immediate review of them.
The protest was organized by civil society groups and religious leaders in Mannar.
