OMP Commissioner Noordeen resigns

COLOMBO : Commissioner of Office on Missing Persons, OMP, Shiraz Noordeen, who took over office in December, has tendered his resignation from his post on Thursday, April 28.

Noordeen had sent the letter to the President last week.

Speaking to Colombo Times, Noordeen  said that in early March, he indicated his resignation due to various reasons  but it was held back on the assurance given by the government to resolve certain issues.

“On 16th March Foreign Secretary Dr. Jayanath Colambage met me and gave assurance to resolve many issues faced by the OMP,” Noordeen said .  

Week after, a meeting was summoned by Minister G.L Peries with all stakeholders including senior most officials of Justice ministry. In the said meeting assurance was given to strengthen the OMP with adequate resources to work independently, further Prof G.L Peries instructed to take immediate action to forward a cabinet paper to enhance the resources of the OMP.

Foriegn Ministry’s Secretary Dr. Jayanath Kolambage was doing the peace making negotiations with Noordeen and assured him there won’t be any Interference to the affairs of OMP by any officials of Justice ministry.

“ Since nothing was improved for well over six weeks, as assured by the foreign minister and his secretary, I tendered my resignation to President.” Noordeen concluded.
