COLOMBO – Azath S. Salley Leader of National Unity Alliance and former Governor of the Western Province has expressed his concerns over the sudden resignation of Judge T. Saravanarajah and has requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe to take positive measures to uphold the rule of law in the country.
In a letter addressed to the president of Sri Lanka, Salley stated : “ Resignation of Judge T. Saravanarajah: A Grave Concern for Judicial Independence The National Unity Alliance, led by Mr. M. Azath S. Salley, expresses its deep concern and apprehension regarding the resignation of Judge T. Saravanarajah from all judicial positions.
In his resignation letter, Judge Saravanarajah has cited persistent threats to his life and the accompanying stress as the compelling reasons for his decision. Judge T. Saravanarajah’s resignation comes as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of upholding judicial independence within our democracy. It is disheartening to witness such a prominent jurist leave the bench due to security concerns, especially in an era where the independence of the judiciary is a cornerstone of our democratic principles.
The National Unity Alliance firmly believes in the foundational principle that no one, regardless of their position or affiliation, should be above the rule of law. The preservation of an impartial and fearless judiciary is essential to the continued progress of our nation along the democratic path. It is incumbent upon all stakeholders, including the government and relevant authorities, to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Judge Saravanarajah’s resignation and to ensure the safety and security of our judges. Such incidents must not be taken lightly, as they have the potential to erode public trust in the judicial system.
We call upon His Excellency, President Ranil Wickramasinghe, to take immediate and decisive action to address this matter and to reassure the nation of the unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting judicial independence.
