Muslims observe independence day at Wellawatte Jumma Mosque

COLOMBO :The Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, in coordination with the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs, organized a Religious Observance Program on the occasion of Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day on Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at the Wellawatha Jummah Mosque.

The event was graced by Dr. Rizvi Salih, MP, Deputy Speaker, as the Chief Guest, and Muneer Mulafer, Deputy Minister of National Integration, as thel Guest of Honor.
Also in attendance were the Chairman of the Wakf Board, Members of the Wakf Tribunal and Board, distinguished Ulamas, government officials, trustees and members of the congregation of the Wellawatha Jummah Mosque, students of the Wellawatha Quran Madrasa, distinguished invitees, and others.
The morning programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Dr. Rizvi Salih, MP, Deputy Speaker. Followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the members of the Armed Forces and Police who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s sovereignty and integrity.

Qirath recitation was delivered by Ash Sheikh M.S.M. Shiyam (Rashadi), Imam of Wellawatha Jummah Mosque.

Welcome speech by M.S.M. Nawas, Director of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs.

Special Dua recited in Sinhala and Tamil by Ash Sheikh Arkam Nooramith, General Secretary of the All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulama Council.

Keynote Speech was made by Dr. Rizvi Salih, highlighting the contributions of Muslim leaders to Sri Lanka’s independence and socio-economic and political development. It was followed by a speech by Muneer Mulafer, emphasizing the importance of peace, harmony, and coexistence among all communities for a prosperous future.
The programme conclude with the vote of thanks proposed by Al Haj M.M. Irfan,
Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Wellawatha Jummah Mosque and it was followed by a sumptuous breakfast,
