Minister Sabry holds successful meetings with IMF officials in Washington

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s delegation led by its Finance Minister Ali Sabry met with the IMF Vice President for South Asian Region Hartwig Schafer in Washington on Wednesday , April 20.

Speaking to the Colombo Times from New York Sabry said it was a fruitful meeting which covered a wide range of negotiations with the IMF official.

Following the meeting, Schafer tweeted : “ Had a good meeting today with Sri Lanka’s  Finance Minister Ali Sabry and Central  Bank Governor Weerasinghe, discussed actions to address the economic crisis, support stabilization and recovery, and protect the vulnerable people.”

Schafer also said : “ We at the World Bank are deeply concerned about the impacts of the crisis on the poor and vulnerable and stand ready to provide emergency support for essential medicines and health-related supplies, nutrition, and education.

Sabry also met with the top officials of the World Bank & the International Finance Corporation (IFC) including Country Director (World Bank) Faris Hadad-Zervos Managing Director of IFC Makhtar Diop in Washington DC on 19th April 2022. The discussion centered on the areas of assistance and possible paths for economic growth and economic stability. The two institutions have reiterated their commitment to work with the Government of Sri Lanka to find sustainable solutions to support and strengthen the Economy of Sri Lanka.

The Lankan delegation team comprised the finance minister, Secretary to the Treasury Mahinda Siriwardana and Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.
