
COLOMBO: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Namal Rajapakse said here on Sunday,Jan 22 that there is no intention of extending the tenure of President in Sri Lanka .
Rajapaksa was reacting to a statement made in the parliament by Diana Gamage that the term of the office of President should be extended . The minister said President Gotabaya Rajapakse nor Premier Mahinda Rajapakse is in favour of such undue weight extension.
Former President Maithripala Senanayake said : “ It is not right of Parliamentarian Diana Gamage to speak of the President extending his tenure without taking the President’s opinion into account.”
Speaking further, the former President said that such an incident has never taken place in Sri Lanka, and the Government must be aware of what happened to the former President J.R. Jayawardena who attempted to violate election boundaries, and as a person who took steps to decrease his tenure, no President would take a decision to extend their tenure.
