Message from the High Commissioner of Maldives His Excellency Masood Imad

On this 59th Independence Day of Maldives, I extend my heartfelt greetings to His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Moosa Zameer, and to the Government and people of Maldives. I also wish to extend very warm greeting to all the members of the Maldivian community residing here in the Sri Lanka.

The day of Independence is a commemoration of our freedom and liberty. It cultivates in each of us a profound sense of nationalism and community. It is a day on which we unite as a nation to honor our Dhivehi identity and our past.

We mark this day because it ended British colonial rule in the Maldives. It signifies the end of an era. As we celebrate our independence, I would like to take a moment to honor Summuwul Ameer President Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefaanu, the leader who was instrumental in achieving our independence. Also, all those other heroes, who contributed in every way throughout history to ensure the independence our nation. May Allah bless their souls and grant them eternal bliss in Heaven.

On days like this, it is important to remember and focus on the tireless efforts of those who strived to protect and preserve the independence and sovereignty of our Dhivehi Raajje.

Today, we also mark 59 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Sri Lanka is the first country that recognized Independent Maldives. Sri Lanka and the Maldives share a complex a rich history of cultural and social connections. It is noteworthy also to mention that the accord which ended the British rule over Maldives was signed here in Sri Lanka on this day in 1965.

Whilst we celebrate our Independence Day, let us also keep in mind our obligations and responsibilities to the future of the Dhivehi Raajje. Together, we can endeavor to guarantee that our nation occupies its proper position within the global community and continues to inspire the world.

I would like to conclude my remarks by extending my heartfelt congratulations to all the Dhivehin on the occasion of their Independence Day. May the Almighty Allah grant us, the people of Maldives strength to safeguard the independence of our nation for the benefit of our future generations
