Islamic New Year: Message from Environment Minister Hafiz Naseer Ahamed

“ It gives me great pleasure to send these greetings and good wishes to all Muslim brethren living in Sri Lanka and abroad. The month of Muharram marks the beginning of a new Islamic year. It is believed that it was the day when Prophet Muhammad moved from Mecca to Medina, leading his people. His pilgrimage is called Hijra. Muslims around the world are celebrating this day.

The Prophet’s “Hijrah” was a turning point in Islamic history. This is why the Islamic calendar came into force based on this event.

Although this Hijra took place in the month of Rabiul Awwal, the month of Muharram is predicted to be the first month. The reason for this is that it was during this Muharram that the Prophet decided to migrate from Makkah to Madinah.

Therefore, in this Islamic New Year, which was implemented based on the thoughts of the Prophet, let there be good things for the people of the country for a happier and peaceful life.
