It gives me great pleasure to extend my heartfelt greetings to all Sri Lankans, especially the Muslim community worldwide, on the occasion of the National Milad-un-Nabi, which marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Milad-un-Nabi marks the observance of both the birth and death of Muhammad (peace be upon him), regarded by Muslims as the last messenger of Allah and a guide for all humanity. Its importance encompasses both spiritual and social aspects. This day commemorates the birth of the Prophet, who delivered the message of Islam, which emphasizes belief in one all-powerful God, as well as principles of mercy, justice, and social equity. It provides Muslims with an opportunity to reflect on the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his kindness, humility, and leadership. It also emphasizes tolerance, equality, and service to others through the Prophet Muhammad’s message of peace, and reminds humanity as a whole of these timeless values that transcend religious boundaries.
In many countries, including Sri Lanka, the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi is recognized as a national holiday, symbolizing the importance of interfaith harmony and respect for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Muslim community. Milad-un-Nabi transcends mere celebration with grandeur and festivity; as Muslims, it is imperative that we dedicate ourselves to embodying the exemplary life of Prophet Muhammad, which includes virtues such as compassion, justice, honesty and a commitment to serving humanity.
The annual National Milad-un-Nabi celebrations, held in various Districts of Sri Lanka, not only strengthen the unity of the Muslim community through island-wide celebrations, but also foster intercultural dialogue and highlight the diversity that enriches Sri Lanka. This year, the National Milad-un-Nabi celebrations take on added significance as the celebrations are to be held in the Hambantota District under the patronage of H.E. the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The choice of Hambantota District for this celebration reflects our collective efforts to bring national celebrations closer to the different parts of our country, thereby strengthening the multi-religious and multi-ethnic nature of Sri Lanka and the spirit of unity.
On this auspicious occasion, let us take a moment to contemplate the lasting message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). On this Milad-un-Nabi Day, let us commit to living with dignity, upholding justice, safeguarding the vulnerable and creating a Sri Lanka that ensures peace for generations to come.
