MELBOURNE :Mates Vision Australia, a Melbourne based humanitarian not for profit organisation, recently held its 14th annual charity cricket tournament in Melbourne on 26 January 2026, continuing a tradition that has become a key community event over the past 14 years.
The organisation carries out a wide range of community and humanitarian initiatives both in Sri Lanka and in Melbourne, including orphan support, widows support, scholarship programs for underprivileged children, support for children with special needs, medical aid projects and a homeless outreach program. Funds raised through the annual cricket tournament are largely directed towards supporting underprivileged children in Sri Lanka, with a strong focus on education support, orphan care and long term child welfare programs.
The tournament has grown into a major annual gathering, bringing together volunteers, players and community members while raising vital funds for humanitarian causes in both Australia and Sri Lanka.
This year’s event was particularly significant as it also served as a tribute to Adhil Hussain, a dedicated volunteer of Mates Vision Australia and a respected community figure, who passed away a few months ago. Adhil was known for his passion for service, his strong community values and his love for cricket, and was widely regarded as a pillar of the organisation.
In his memory, the Adhil Hussain Memorial Spirit of Cricket Award was introduced to recognise sportsmanship, character and service to the community. The award was presented to Shamil Mahroof for exemplifying these values.
On the sporting front, the tournament concluded with “24 Not Out” crowned as champions, while “Soaring Sixers” finished as runners up after a competitive final.
The event once again reflected the core mission of Mates Vision Australia, using sport as a platform to unite communities and create lasting humanitarian impact, while continuing to support vulnerable families and children, particularly in Sri Lanka, through education, care and long term support programs.
