Marriage without the bride ? : Palestine Solidarity Meeting in Colombo

MOHAMMED RASOOLDEEN
COLOMBO : A Palestine Solidarity Meeting was held in Colombo at the auditorium of the All Ceylon YMMA Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 9 where all the concerned persons and officials were present except a single official from the embassy of Palestine.
Iran ambassador, high commissioner of Africa , head of the cultural wing of the Iranian embassy and officials from the civic bodies, social service organizations and well-wishers of the Palestine community were present in large numbers. Erudite speeches were delivered by the two ambassadors and also by community leaders and officials of the human rights bodies.
The absence of Palestinian embassy officials was strongly felt and the attendees began to ponder why the Palestinian mission in Colombo failed to send a single official to signify its support to the solidarity meeting which was held in sympathy of the Palestinian people who suffered in the hands of the merciless Israelis.
When contacted , an official from the Palestinian embassy told Colombo Times that the mission was unaware of such a meeting. One of organizers of the meeting who was listening to the phone conversation told Colombo Times that the particular person promised to attend the meeting when the invitation was given to him.

Sri Lankans have always stood and supported for the cause of the Palestinians for decades and even sent large sums of monies to the affected children in Gaza, then Why this lackadaisical treatment by the Palestinian mission in Colombo ? The mission owes an answer to the people of this fair isle.
