COLOMBO – The 9th Naleem Hajiar Memorial Oration under the theme ‘Dr. M.A.M. Shukri – Life & Intellectual Contributions’ was held on Tuesday 3 October 2023, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute auditorium in Colombo. This year’s memorial oration coincides with the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of Jamiah Naleemiah, the pioneer institute for Islamic studies in Sri Lanka, which was founded by the great philanthropist Naleem Hajiar.
Al-Haj Yakooth Naleem, President of the Naleemiah Institute of Islamic Studies Inc., Ash-Sheikh A.C. Agar Mohamed, Rector of Jamiah Naleemiah, Rifki Cassim, Attorney-at-Law, Chairman of the Naleem Hajiar Memorial Oration Forum, Ash-Sheikh Dr. A.P.M. Abbas, Head of the Department of Arabic Studies at Jamiah Naleemiah, and Ash-Sheikh Lafir Madani President of Rabitha An-Naleemiyyeen, the alumni association of the institute, were among the distinguished guests attending the event.
The memorial oration was delivered by Ash-Sheikh A.C. Agar Mohamed, who portrayed the multidimensional personality of the late Dr. Shukri and outlined the contributions made by the late Shukri who had sacrificed the best part of his life for the progress and prosperity of Jamiah Naleemiah. Ash-Sheikh Dr. A.P.M. Abbas presented a detailed description of Dr. Shukri’s intellectual and scholarly contributions and research works.
A book titled ‘Dr. M.A.M. Shukri: Intellectual Contribution & Research Work’ (Tamil), published by the Naleemiah Bureau of Islamic Publications, containing the compilation of research articles written on Dr. Shukri’s works was also launched at the event. The maiden copy was presented to Asif, son of Dr. Shukri.
Family members of Naleem Hajiar and Dr. Shukri were among the notable personalities and distinguished guests present at the event.
