COLOMBO : Attorney-at-Law Shiraz Noordeen Appointed Commissioner of the Office of Missing Persons’ OMP.
The Parliamentary Council decided to concur with the recommendations of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint Senior Attorney-at-Law Mr. Shiraz Noordeen as a Commissioner of Office of Missing Persons’ for three years with effect from the 13th of December 2021.
Noordeen has been appointed to this esteemed position owing to his renowned work as a leading social activist and an avid defender of human rights. He will join the ranks of other commissioners/members of Office of Missing Persons’ who encompass the former Inspector General of Police Chandra Perera, Retired Judge Mrs. Thassim and Senior Attorney-at-Law Mahesh Katulanda.
The Office of Missing Persons’ was established under Act No 14 of 2016 (as amended) and in compliance with the Human Rights charters of the United Nations. The Office has been carrying out functions that are in relation and in compliance to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance Act, No. 5 of 2018
