Lanka’s former Premier Late SWRD Bandaranaike remembered

COLOMBO ; The 62nd memorial of late Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike was observed on Sunday September 26. 

S W R D Bandaranaike was the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka serving from April 1956, when his party, the Sri Lanka, Freedom Party, won a landslide victory at the general election, until his death at the hands of an assassin in September 1959.

His wife, Sirimavo Bandaranaike was the first woman prime minister of the world and his daughter Chandrika became the president of Sri Lanka subsequently. He was killed by a Buddhist monk,Rev. Somarama Thero at his Rosmead Place residence and the assassin was sentenced to death and Rev. Buddharakita Thero was sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring for the homicide.  

Former President and daughter of SWRD Bandaranaike, Chandrika Bandaranaike visited the Horagolla Memorial on Sunday (26) morning to pay tribute to her late father.

“The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) did not organize any memorial. The memorial was organized by the Bandaranaike Family. The party only used the Bandaranaike name for their own gains,” Chandrika Bandaranaie told reporters when leaving the memorial.

She reprimanded the Former President who is also the present SLFP Chairman for only visiting the memorial once during his five-year tenure as the Head of State.(Pic News First)
