Lankan premier attends Bangladesh national day celebrations in Colombo

COLOMBO : Bangladesh High Commissioner in Colombo, Tareq Md. Ariful Islam and his wife Aliya Najma Nur hosted a reception to mark the 51st Anniversary of the Independence and National Day of Bangladesh at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo on Saturday, March 26.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his wife Shiranthi were present as chief guests while minister S B Dissanayake was the guest-of-honour at the event. State minister Taraka Balasuriya and minister of highways Johnshston Fernando were also present at the evening function.

In his brief speech, High Commissioner Ariful Islam said that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are celebrating their 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Minister Dissanayake said there is some 100 Sri Lankans actively engaged in business with Dhaka and the trade relations should be improved more.

Prime Minister cut the cake to ceremonially begin the event.

Bangladesh foreign minister, Dr A K Abdul Momen, MP is slated to deliver a lecture on . “BANGABANDHU’S BANGLADESH AT 50: THE SOUTH ASIAN PERSPECTIVE”. The event Jointly hosted by Department of International Relations, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo together and the High Commission of Bangladesh in Sri Lanka at 4p,  On March 29, at 4:00 pm at the Senate Hall, College House,University of Colombo.

Meanwhile, there will be  ‘Bangladesh–Sri Lanka Business Roundtable’ on 30th March 2022 at 4 p.m. at the ‘Lotus Room’ of the BMICH.  Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen, MP will exchange views with the Sri Lankan business community for further enhancing business relations between the two countries.
