DOHA : The Sri Lanka Embassy in Doha recovered Rs. 80,886,895.32 from January to July 2026 as death compensation on behalf of the Next of Kin (NoK) of Sri Lankan nationals who had passed away in Qatar, despite the challenges arising from the tense situation in the region. The recovered funds were remitted to the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Ministry in Colombo and to the respective deceased persons’ NoKs. The amount also included cases pending since 2023.
Out of the total Rs. 80,886,895.32, Rs. 13,229,128.00 was directly paid to the NoKs through the efforts of the Embassy, while Rs. 67,657,767.32 was recovered by the Embassy and transferred to the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Ministry for disbursement to the respective NoKs.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Doha Sithara Khan and Minister Dharmasiri Wijewardane closely co-ordinated with the respective companies, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Ministry’s Consular Affairs Division, the Qatar Government and the legal firm working with the Embassy to recover the compensation payments. In 2025, the Embassy recovered Rs. 197,719,710.36 in compensation and disbursed the funds to the NoKs in Sri Lanka.
