COLOMBO : Sri Lanka’s Honorary Consul GeneraI for Singapore, Dr. HonyJayantha Dharmadasa has outlined the bilateral relations between the two countries on the 56th National Day of Singapore on Monday, August 9.

In his national day message, Dharmadasa has said : “ I take the liberty  of  penning  this message  on the occasion of  the 56th National Day of Singapore, which unlike in the previously  cannot be celebrated  physically  this year due to  the present  global situation. However,  Singapore will take steps to  celebrate it in a most appropriate and safest manner.

Sri Lanka and Singapore are continuing to maintain the bilateral relations between both countries in-spite of a global pandemic.   The Diplomatic ties and the bond between the two countries dates back to 50 years  and it was only recently  that both countries celebrated the 50 years of Diplomatic  relations and to mark this  important occasion a stamp was issued at a simple ceremony.    Prior to the Covid-19 there were frequent high level of exchanges and co-operation between the two countries. This also paved the way for development of many sectors such as agriculture, education, trade and investments.    Although both countries have suffered setbacks ,they continuously strived to  maintain the  friendship and co-operation  which is expected to grow more and more and deepen  in the years to come.  In-spite of having their own setbacks and curtailments in  the financial sector, Singapore  came forward to extend valuable support to Sri Lanka to curb the pandemic .   In doing so, they have donated    healthcare and medical equipment, including Test Kits, Ventilators and personal protective equipment etc.   Themaseck  Foundation of Singapore also donated one Million Masks to the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka to assist in their  timely requirements.

It is my personal wish that our countries should  come out of this devastating pandemic and that we are  back to the former glory.

As Singapore celebrate this historic day, I  extend my best wishes to  HE  Madam Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore, Hon. Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan , Minister for Foreign Affairs, Chandra Das,  Non-Resident High Commissioner of Singapore to Sri Lanka, all our colleagues at the MFA  and ICA, the people of Singapore and all our Singaporean Colleagues  in Sri Lanka.”
