Lanka police gets 35 sniffer dogs for Rs 58mn from Holland

COLOMBO; Thirty five canines worth Rs.58 Mn was bought from the Netherlands to the Katunayake Airport in the early hours of yesterday (5) for the Police Kennel Division.

These dogs include 13 Belgian Malinois dogs, 12 German Shepherd dogs and 10 English Spaniel dogs and they had been bought from a private farm in the Netherlands named, K-10 Working

Dog. Twenty one of the dogs brought in are female and the remaining 14 are male.

Among them, two English Spaniel females are already pregnant and another Belgian Malinois female had been bred with a strong dog from the farm.

Earlier in 2018, dogs were imported from abroad for the police service dog division.

These dogs were brought from the Netherlands through Qatar, and from there they were broughtto Katunayake Airport’s air cargo terminal yesterday at 2.05 in the morning by Qatar Airways flight KR-662.Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Talduwa was present to accept these dogs at the Katunayake Airport’s Animal Quarantine Institute after being checked by veterinary officers there, steps were taken to hand them over to the trainers of the dogs to be taken to the Police Kennels Division. DIG Nihal Talduwa said they hopes to start a new breeding process using these dogs in this country to reduce the high cost of importing dogs.

He said that in particular, these dogs are expected to be used for official work in the Western andSouthern provinces to detect drugs and they are also expected to get their support for the ‘Yukthiya’ operation.

The Police Kennels has 372 official dogs and these 35 dogs are also expected to be included in service after their training, he said. Pics Police Dog Center,Holland
