Islamic Center of Sri Lanka writes to World Muslim Congress about the forced cremation of Covid infected dead bodies in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO : Former Mayor of Colombo, Hussein Mohamed, president of the Islamic Center in Sri Lanka has sought the intervention of the World Muslim Congress to resolve the problem of forced cremation of Covid infected dead bodies which has affected the Muslim minority in the island.

In a letter addressed to the Secretary General of the Karachi-based World Muslim Congress, Mohammed has said : “ We, Sri Lanka Islamic Centre and its associated organizations in Sri Lanka and Ulamas wish to write your Excellency with regard to the decision taken by the authorities of Sri Lankan government to cremate the dead bodies who died with COVID 19 We, Sri Lanka Islamic Centre and other organizations, professionals, civil societies,  and medical doctors made several requests to the government to reconsider the decision and allow the Muslim to bury their dead bodies under the guidelines issued by WHO ,  since the WHO recommends to for both ( burial and cremation) in the meantime most of international organizations /agents also urged the government to reconsider the decision and allow the Muslim to bury their dead bodies who died by COVID 19 but the government is very silent and ignoring all the requests.

We hope that your excellency will look in to this serious situation and will take necessary steps through your organization and your government to urge our government to reconsider the decision and allow the Muslims to bury their dead bodies according to the guidelines issued by WHO.”
