Islamic body wants government to uphold democratic values

COLOMBO : The All-Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama,ACJU has requested the Government authorities to honor and uphold democratic values and internationally recognized Human Rights, and to conduct themselves honestly and impartially and to resolve the issues which caused this economic crisis, as soon as possible.

In a statement signed by Ash Shaikh M. Arkam Nooramith, General Secretary – ACJU said : “ Due to the economic and political crises that have occurred in our country in the recent past, the people of this country have been democratically demanding solutions to the economic crisis and changes in the political system.

Although some political changes have occurred, the citizens of our country aspire for more changes and have continued to engage in protests as sustainable solutions have not been yet provided for the economic crisis.

Amidst this situation, it is unfortunate to note that those who engaged these democratic protests have been unfairly targeted and arrested under various accusations. It is significant to note that prominent Buddhist, Christian and other religious leaders, lawyers, medical professionals, several civil organizations and international human rights organizations have expressed their displeasure and concerns in this regard.

During these critical circumstances, when international support is vital to resolve the economic crisis currently faced by our country, we may lose the possibility of seeking such assistance and cooperation from foreign countries due to the undemocratic conduct of Government authorities.

We pray to Almighty Allah, during this blessed month of Muharram, to resolve this crisis situation and to establish justice and fairness in our country and bless our Motherland with prosperity and development.”
