India celebrates 73rd Republic Day in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s foreign minister G.L.Peiris said here on Wednesday evening, Jan,26 that the Indo-Lanka relations is interwoven and it is found in every aspect of people’s life.

The minister was making the keynote address at India’s 73rd Republic Day reception hosted the Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay at the India House in Colombo on Wednesday January 26.

A number of ministers and the Sri Lankan parliament speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena were also present at the reception held under the patronage of Lankan finance minister Basil Rajapaksa.

It was on 26 January 1950 that the world’s largest written constitution came into force.  This momentous occasion was observed through a series of ceremonies and events organized by the High Commission, throughout the day, in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocol.

Speaking further Peiris said India has touched on every aspect of Sri Lanka’s life and it has helped Sri Lanka in good and bad times. “ it’s a relationship built on loyalty, goodwill, friendship and mutual concerns.

In his welcome address, the Indian high commissioner said that India’s neighbourhood policy ties up Sri Lanka in all its areas of cooperation.

“ The two countries maintain strong relations with each other for centuries and we want better connectivity to march forward,” the diplomat said, recalling the joint challenge the two countries undertook to fight against Covid virus. He said in two years’ time , the two countries will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

A video clip of the Indian foreign minister Dr.S Jaishankar’s message was screened at the event. The event concluded with a sumptuous dinner, was preceded by a cultural show depicting the cultural affinity between the two countries.
