Independence Day celebrations at Jawatte mosque

COLOMBO – The Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs, in coordination with the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs, organized a Islamic Religious Observance Program on the occasion of Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day on Wednesday February 4 at the Jawatte Jummah Mosque.

The event was graced by Deputy Minister of Religious and Cultural Affairs Muneer Mulaffer as the chief guest,

Also in attendance were the Chairman of the Wakf Board, Members of the Wakf Tribunal , distinguished Ulamas, government officials, trustees and members of the congregation of the Jawatte Jummah Mosque, distinguished invitees, and others.

The programme commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Deputy Minister of Religious and Cultural Affairs Muneer Mulaffer followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the members of the Armed Forces and Police who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s sovereignty and integrity.
Welcome speech by M.S.M. Nawas, Director of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs.

All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama Colombo District President Ash Sheikh Abdul Mukshith and Mayor of Colombo Vraîe Cally Balthazaar addressed the gathering.
Special Dua (prayers) recited in Tamil by Ash Sheikh M.H.M. Firdhouse, Chief Imam of the Jawatte Jumma Mosque.

Keynote Speech was made by Muneer Mulaffer, highlighting the contributions of Muslim leaders to Sri Lanka’s independence and socio-economic and political development. Muneer Mulaffer, emphasizing the importance of peace, harmony, and coexistence among all communities for a prosperous future.
The programme concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Treasurer of the Mosque Mafaz Ishak.

President of the Jawatte Jumma Mosque Fazal Abdeen, Senior Officials of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs and trustees of the mosque were also present.
